I’m back. Back from the weekend excursion that was Armadillocon. I had an excellent time and met some really great people during the trip. Because of the amount of awesomeness, I’ll break my recap into a couple of parts. And not necessarily in chronological order.
Saturday, my buddy Clint and I had a chance to chat with Guest of Honor John Scalzi, who will actually be making an ConQuest appearance in Kansas City next May.
During his Q&A session, I asked John about his most challenging character. He shared several humorous stories about trying to develop both Jane Sagan and Zoe, his protagonist from his newest novel Zoe’s Tale. In fact, regarding Zoe, John postulated the only true way to write about a sixteen-year-old girl included methods that would result in a restraining order being brought against you. And you can guess he wasn’t willing to go to those lengths. Fortunately, he found the next best thing (women who had once been sixteen-year-old girls) by getting help from his wife and “Campbell Award winning” author Mary Robinette Kowal.
As for Clint, he wanted to know where the hell John Perry was in the other Old Man’s War books. John’s response: did you buy a copy of Zoe’s Tale? He also questioned John about the story arcs of Science Fiction writers and whether the typical word limits of the genre (about 100,000) are constraints.
In an ode to the Hugo Award winning author John Scalzi (because he told me it was okay to suck) and some inspiration from a critique group assignment about things that happen at inappropriate places, I’ve written a piece of quasi-fan flash fiction (beware, this piece is rated R) called Insult and Injury.
