Coming late to the party

by Range on July 10, 2008

You know what they say…”better than late never.” I’ve just discovered a couple parties worth attending, where I’m late (in one case 10 years): John Scalzi’s Whatever and Mur Lafferty’s Murverse and I Should Be Writing. I thought I’d share because if I’m late, I’m assuming some of you are, too. And if you’re not, damn you for not sharing sooner.

Scalzi and Bacon
Okay, I’ve seen John Scalzi’s name floating around there for about a year. And, I’ve just now started to follow his career (about the time I heard three or four scifi fiction interviewees say in a row that was who they were reading). But I had no idea he was a bacon junkie.

The last week or two I’ve been skimming his blog and saw his post today The Unbearable Ridiculousness of Bacon. How did I not know this? One Saturday every month my family enjoys the “Homer Simpson” breakfast, which consists of donuts and bacon. When asked what I would do if I could “walk away from it all”, I respond, “Live in the mountains and eat a lb. of bacon everyday.” In fact, it runs in my blood, as I have to tell my six-year-old son that Canadian bacon is “circle” bacon if I have any hope of him eating it.

Now, to find the perfect wine to pair with bacon. By the way, my blood test is Aug. 18.

Mur Lafferty and I Should Be Writing
I’ve heard Mur’s promos for months and just hadn’t made the jump. But, when Shaun Farrell and Adventures in Scifi Publishing featured her and her podcast I Should Be Writing, it was time to subscribe.

I’ve listened to about five episodes and found her to be about as human as any writer I’ve heard podcast or interview. Most try to be, expressing the proper sense of awe and humility to the work, luck and craft of published writing, but sometimes it comes across as…well…lip service. Don’t believe me about how sincere she is, listen to one of Mur’s latest podcasts about confidence as a writer.

If you like superheroes, Mur will have her first published novel Playing for Keeps available on Amazon.com in August.

Enjoy and spread the word!

Thanks so much for the links and kind words! It’s hard to get personal with the podcast sometimes, and it’s great to hear it resonate with someone.

So glad you like the podcast, and thanks for the link to Playing For Keeps!

Bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good!

I too am of the opinion that bacon is one of the top 5 things on the planet. The bacon is the real star, but a pinot noir with it’s fruit should pair nicely. Again, you could pair some Boone’s Farm with bacon and it won’t really matter.

Salute!

Mur–My pleasure! Listening to the podiobook now and lovin’ it.

Chad–Thanks for the bacon pairing. Your love of bacon shows because I didn’t know you knew how to spell Boone’s Farm. I’ll host a Bacon and Boone’s tasting soon–with the wine in shot glasses! I’ll go all out and get Costco’s maple bacon. Hmmm…bacon good.
