Shameless exploitation of my children?

by Range on July 25, 2008

Okay, I just happened to stumble across this contrast because I’ve been playing catch up on the feed, but boy, was the accident telling. Anyone that struggles day-in and day-out to write needs to listen to Mur’s I Should be writing episodes #94 and #82 (and I highly recommend in that order). I want you to hear how different Mur’s life is from six or seven month’s ago to now. How she just about gave up on Playing For Keeps. Don’t let me tell you–I can’t do it justice–you need to listen for yourself. And I don’t care if you have already heard the episodes, listen to them again, back-to-back.

Speaking of Mur, to promote the Aug. 25 Amazon release of Playing For Keeps, she’s hosting a contest asking fans to video record your dance to the book’s theme song. Winner gets a Flip Video Recorder. If she gets at least 40 entries, Mur herself busts a move.

Am I signing up? Yes. Will I appear on camera? No. I see this as the perfect opportunity to shamelessly exploit my super-hero-geeked six-year-old son, who just happens to love wearing every version of Marvel gods painted on his rump. Don’t worry, I’m not that cruel to put my boy in his skivvies on YouTube–the new way to embarrass your children to future dates. For my generation, it was the naked baby bum photo. Now, it could go to a whole new level. By the way, it’s Mur’s birthday today, so send your good vibes.

And I’m on a whole new level this week, completing three major milestones. To start, my first writers group meeting went well–I believe they’ll challenge me (that is, they’ll kick my tail), which is exactly what I need. Secondly, I finished a short story this week that I swear is some of the best work I’ve ever done. I can’t wait for the new group to stress test it. And finally, I concluded a three-year odyssey by resubmitting some of my work to an agent who has shown some interest in my novel. Regardless of the response, I’ve learned a lot about myself and the business in the process.

Anyway, have a great weekend! Wine of the week: Penal, an Australian Shiraz that features on the label the 18 crimes you had to commit to get exiled to the Australia. Fun and tasty.

Next week, I’ll blog on how I plan to get John Scalzi to sign my bacon–not that bacon–at Armadillocon next month.
